For the second time that day, I rode the elevator up to Alec’s office suite. Francine gave me a knowing look as I exited the elevator and walked toward the heavy double-doors of the billionaire’s office.

“He’s still inside, dear. He should be alone. Good luck,” she said.

I drew in a deep breath and entered. Alec was standing near one of the huge windows, morosely staring out across the city with a glass of scotch in his hand. He perked up immediately when he saw me and strode toward me.

“I tried calling you. I’m so sorry for everything, I shouldn’t have gotten upset with you,” Alec said, his voice forlorn as the words poured out from his mouth. “I was just so worn out and exhausted from everything that happened that night, and I…”

“It’s all right,” I said, laying my hand on his arm. “I think we both lost our tempers, it’s all right.”

“I should explained more about why I didn’t want you to talk to Maxine, I was just trying to protect you from this media circus, I knew this would happen to you once everything went public,” Alec said sadly. “I should have known she would try to pull something like this after we saw her outside the restaurant.”

“Alec, I want to know… what happened between you and Maxine?” I said.

“She always wanted to talk to me even after I made it explicitly clear that I don’t give interviews. I kept trying to direct her toward the company’s public relations office, but she was relentless. She incessantly rang my cell phone and my home number, she waited outside my house for me in the mornings. And she would publish any gossip she heard about me, regardless of whether it was true. As if that wasn’t bad enough, she always followed Vera and me around whenever we did anything, even just simply trying to go out for dinner,” he said.

“She’s unreal,” I said, shaking my head.

“I could deal with all of that, it comes with the territory of who I am. But, after Vera died…” Alec said, trailing off. He picked up his glass of scotch and took a long swallow, as if bracing himself for the next part of his tale. “After Vera died, Maxine showed up at the funeral. She was snapping pictures of my family and me, still trying to hound me for an interview. That was the last straw. I called her magazine and told them a restraining order would be the least of their worries if they didn’t call her off. I didn’t see her again until the other night.”

“How awful. I can’t believe she would stoop that low, I don’t blame you for feeling that way about her,” I said.

“I just didn’t want you to have to deal with more of the same,” Alec said.

“All this time I thought you were ashamed of me,” I said in a small voice, lowering my gaze to the floor. “I thought you didn’t want people to know we were together.
